Michael Hartnett Poetry Event with Brian Kirk, Caoilinn Hughes & Mark Roper & MC John O’Donnell

Michael Hartnett Event with poets Caoilinn Hughes, Brian Kirk, Mark Roper and Chair of the event John O’Donnell

This very popular annual event is held in honour of the late, great poet Michael Hartnett and features three celebrated poets.

Caoilinn Hughes’ poetry collection Gathering Evidence won the Irish Times Shine/Strong Award. It was also shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney Prize for Best First Collection and the Pigott Poetry Prize in association with Listowel Writers’ Week. Her work has appeared in Tin House, Granta, POETRY, Best British Poetry, BBC Radio 3 and elsewhere. She divides her time between the Netherlands and Ireland. Her first novel Orchid & the Wasp will be launched here at Listowel Writers’ Week earlier in the day!

Brian Kirk is an award-winning poet and short story writer. In poems of controlled passion and energy, he maps out his territory which, on the surface, is domestic but on closer examination reveals something much deeper. His latest collection After The Fall was published in 2017. His poetry has been widely published and been nominated for the Forward Prize and Pushcart Prize.

Mark Roper’s latest collection Bindweed was shortlisted for The Irish Times Poetry Now Award. A Gather of Shadow was also shortlisted for that award and won the Michael Hartnett Award in 2014. With photographer Paddy Dwan, he has published The River Book and The Backstrand. Their book about the Comeragh Mountains will be published in autumn 2018. He has written librettos for two operas composed by Eric Sweeney.
